He was the son of Col. Samuel HAIRSTON and Judith Sparrell SAUNDERS
Marriage*Robert HAIRSTON married Elizabeth Hairston WOODS, daughter of John WOODS and Agnes Anne HAIRSTON, on 13 February 1812.1,2

Census 1820*Robert HAIRSTON appeared on the census of 7 August 1820 in Franklin, Virginia, Hairston, Robert: males <10 2, 16-25 1, 26-44 1 (Robert), females 16-25 1, slaves 19.3 
Military*The following letter was copied in the book, The Mavity Family, by Norman Bloss Mavity, published in 1954.
"Franklin County Virginia
Whereas Mr. William Mavity a Cittazen of the County and State above written, has made it his pleasure to Emmigrate from Virginia to some of the Western States to Gratify the wisheds of his Family - has thought propper to Call on me to say something respecting his Character, I can with pleasure say, that I was raised a neighbor to Mr. Mavity and he was one one amongst the first men that I had aquaintance with with, I always believed him to be a kind hospitable man, a friendly Neighbour, and I have good authority to say that hew was honest in all his transactions that he was a friend to his Country through life, he was a Moral man himself, and raised his Children to honesty Industry and Morality. I have always herd him spoken of as such by his oldest and most respectable Neighbors, his Companion is likewise entitled to this Character of a Virtuous good Neighbor and all the family, so far as comes withing my knowledge, and I have had some acquaintance with the whole familey, given under my hav this 1st day of March 1824.

I also Called on my father knowing that yourself and him had, had a great Considerable dealings, also his respect for you. Census 1830*He appeared on the census of 1 June 1830 in Franklin, Virginia, Hearston, Robert: males 10-14 2 (William, Robert), 30-39 (Robert), females <5 1 (Ruth), 5-9 1 (Agnes), 20-29 1 (unknown), 30-39 (wife Elizabeth), slaves 23.
He also is listed in Halifax County 1830 Federal Census as a non-resident owner with 15 slaves.4 
DeedHe is mentioned in the property documents of Samuel Saunders HAIRSTON Jr. and Robert Tennent WOODS on 1 June 1834 in Franklin, Virginia; On June 1, 1834, Samuel Hairston, Jr., Robert T. Woods, Robert Hairston, Peter Hairston and Henry T. Callaway form a complicated arrangment so that Samuel Hairston, Jr. and Robert T. Woods can buy 343 acres in Franklin County from Thomas Williams. - Franklin County Deed Book 14, page 105. FSL #7894518 image 388.
WillIn Col. Samuel HAIRSTON's will dated 4 November 1834, Robert HAIRSTON was named as an heir; Samuel Hairston left a will dated 7 November 1834 and a codicil dated 8 November 1834. Samuel Hairston also left a second codicil dated 4 November 1834, but I believe the court clerk wrote November instead of December. The will was filed with the Franklin County Court on 5 January 1835. - Franklin County Will Book 4, pages 290-292, FSL 7644995 image 455.5
Census 1840*He appeared on the census of 1 June 1840 in Franklin, Virginia, Harston, Robert: males 20-29 1 (William), 50-59 1 (Robert), females 5-9 2 (Elizabeth F., Ruth L.), 10-14 1 (Agnus Elizabeth), 30-39 1 (wife Elizabeth), slaves 8.6 
Census 1850*He appeared on the census of 20 December 1850 in Franklin, Virginia, Robert 59, Elizabeth 56, Agnes E J 26, Ruth L 21, Elizabeth F 16, living with a clergyman Robert Grey 30. All born in Virginia.2

 
Death*He died between 1851 and 1859 in Virginia, he is not listed in 1860 census.7
