Hordsville Plantation Cemetery

Henry County, Virginia

The Hordsville Plantation home was built about 1836 by George Hairston, Jr.  His father, George Stovall Hairston, purchased the 400 acres of land from John Hord on 26 March 1798.   John Hord died in 1803 and is buried on a knoll, which can be seen from the front of the house, he is not buried in the cemetery behind the house.  John Hord became a Hairston relative when he married Ruth Hunter, the daughter of Alexander Hunter and his wife Marth "Patsy" Hairston.  The Hairston Family cemetery is located behind the house and was referred to as "God's Acre".  The wall around the cemetery was built in 1963 and dedicated to Peter W. Hairston.  The house is located near Stanleytown on the old Carolina Post Road between Bassett and Fieldale and is a copy of a house George had seen in Richmond.
