Court Record*Court held for Henry County the 10th day of October 1836 -"The Court herebefore directed to be summoned for the trial of Kaly a negro woman slave the property of Peter Hairston charged with feloniously stabbing Peyton Conway, having failed to convene, the prisoner was this day brought up for trial, whereupon on motion of the all presenting for the Commonwealth and for reasons appearing to the Court the trial of the prisoner is deferred until the next Court. And the Court being of opinion that the offence with which the prisoner stands charged is one for which she is entitled to ?. Peter Hairston, the owner of the prisoner, and William Martin of said County came into Court, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally indebted to his excellency the Governor of this Commonwealth and his successors for the use of the Commonwealth in the sum of one thousand dollars to be levied of their respective goods and chattels lands and tenements. Conditioned that the said prisoner shall be personally present at the next term of this Court, to stand her trial for the offence with which she ? charged." - Henry County Minute Book 2, page 302. At a Court of Quarterly Sessions continued and held for Henry County at the Court house the 15th November 1836 - Present Thomas Jones, Thomas B Dandridge, John T Wooton, George Woody, Gent. -- "Kaley a negro woman slave the property of Peter Hairston, charged with unlawfully and feloniously stabbing Peyton Conway, was this day put to the bar and upon her argument pleaded not guilty, whereupon the Court proceeded to examine diverse witnesses as well on behalf of the Commonwealth as the prisoner at the bar who was defended by William Martin Esqr. On consideration whereof the Court is unanimously of opinion that the prisoner is guilty of unlawful stabbing and entitled to the benefit of Clergy, and do sentence her to be burnt in the hand, and to receive ten lashes." -- Henry County Minute Book 2, page 304.
