Biography*RICHARD WELCH was born in the Sumter District, South Carolina, in 1762, and died on 10 November 1838, in Natchez, Mississippi. He married, first, in South Carolina, Mary (Marguerite) Stuart who died there before June 1791. The children of Richard and Mary were: Timothy, born 4 January 1785 and died 4 July 1872; John; Henry; and Bryant (see above), died about 1830 and married Sally Martin.

Richard married, second, in South Carolina, on 10 June 1791 Sarah Ervin who was born 17 October 1768. She was the daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth James Ervin. The Col. John Ervin Family Bible records this under Marriages, as follows: “Sarah Ervin to Richard Welch, Rev. Soldier of Charleston, South Carolina, son of James Welch and descendant of the Reformers, John Welch and John Knox, on 10 June 1791.” They had a son, James, born in the Sumter District, South Carolina, on 11 January 1799, died 25 July 1882, and married Martha Hobart Hill. Sarah Ervin Welch is said to have died in South Carolina and we see Richard moving to Bryan County, Georgia, in 1802. Richard married, third, before 1807, Faraby. It is thought that there were no children of this marriage.

Richard seems to have lived in the Sumter District, South Carolina, until about 1802 when he was living in Bryan County, Georgia. In January 1815, he and his children and their families moved to Wayne County, Mississippi, where they were living in 1816, and on to Covington County, Mississippi, where they settled in Oakeywork Creek and were living as shown in the 1820 Census.

As noted in the marriage entry in the Ervin Bible, Richard Welch was a Revolutionary Soldier. The Historical Commission of South Carolina has in its files an account against the state for L 2.11.5 submitted by Richard Welch for 36 days as a private in General Marion's Brigade in 1782.
