Biography* | BIOGRAPHY - 1927 WILLIAM GEORGE HAIRSTON, M. D. One of the best known physicians in Conecuh County in Doctor William George Hairston, of Evergreen. He has practiced medicine in the county for a period of twenty years or more. Doctor Hairston is also active in local business affairs, and has the honor of being state president of the Evangelistic Club of America. He was born at Fort Deposit, Lowndes County, Alabama, February 3, 1884, and his ancestry is Scotch in the paternal line and Irish in the maternal. His great-grandfather, Peter Hairston, was a native of Scotland and on coming to America settled in South Carolina and later became a pioneer of Macon County, Alabama, where he was a planter and slave holder. The grandfather, John Hairston, was born in Macon County, Alabama, in 1802, and for the greater part of his life followed farming in the vicinity of Fort Deposit. He was the first agent appointed by the Louisville & Nashville Railway Company at Fort Deposit. He died there in 1891. William Lloyd Hairston, father of Doctor Hairston, was born near Fort Deposit in 1853, and died there in 1909, having spent practically all of his life in that community. For many years he followed merchandising, retiring about 1905. At the time of his death he was tax collector of Lowndes County, was active as a democrat, a deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church for many years, and belonged to the Masonic fraternity. William L. Hairston married Josephine Jordan, who was born near Fort Deposit in 1856 and died at the home of her son, Doctor Hairston, at Evergreen in April, 1923. Doctor Hairston was the oldest of her five children. Annie Lou is the wife of Doctor David A. Mason, a physician and surgeon at Felix in Perry County, Alabama; Flora died when nineteen years old; Emma Ely is the wife of Augustus K. Clements, an electrical engineer in the shops of the Atlantic Coast Line Railway at Montgomery; and Lucy Mae is the wife of Doctor Paul Vaughn, employed in the veterinary bureau of the government at Montgomery. William George Hairston grew up at Fort Deposit, graduated from high school there in 1899 and for two years attended Highland Home College at Highland Home. At the end of that time he was graduated. in 1901, with the Bachelor of Science degrees. Two years were spent in the medical department of the l'niversitv of Alabama at Mobile, and he completed a course at the Maryland Medical College at Baltimore in 1904. While in medical college he was a member of the Kappa Phi fraternity. He passed the state board of medical examiners in the spring of 1904 and after one year of practice at Fort Deposit, located in Conecuh County, practicing in the Burnt Corn locality for fifteen years. Since 1919 he has been a busy physician at Evergreen, looking after a general medical and surgical practice. His offices are in the postoffice building on West Front Street. He owns a residence at 42 Main Street and until 1924 also had some farming interests. Doctor Hairston was quarantine officer of Conecuh County from 1920 to 1923. He is a democrat; for four years has been president of the Board of Education of the city of Evergreen; is treasurer of the Missionary Baptist Church and a member of its Board of Deacons; belongs to the Conecuh County Alabama State, Southern and American Medical Associations. In October, 1924, he was honored with election as state president of the Evangelistic Club of America. Doctor Hairston is affiliated with Greening Lodge No. 53, F. and A. M; Alabama Consistory of the Scottish Rite at Mobile; and Abba Temple of the Mystic Shrine, at Mobile. Formerly he was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Improved Order of Red Men. Among other business interests Doctor Hairston owns and operates the Conecuh Drug Company, the leading drug house between Greenville and Brewton. He is secretary and treasurer of the Evergreen Courant Publishing Company, publishers of the Evergreen Courant. On June 10, 1908, at Greensboro, Alabama, he married Miss Minnie Lee Ward, daughter of D. W. and Mary C. Ward. Her father, who died in 1910, was a farmer at Greensboro. Her mother now resides at Tuscaloosa. Mrs. Hairston graduated from the literary and piano and voice department of Judson College, and being a very proficient musician, continues that interest actively, in charge of the piano and voice department of the State Secondary Agricultural School at Evergreen. Doctor and Mrs. Hairston have four children: William Ward, a freshman in the State Secondary Agricultural School at Evergreen; Lloyd, a student in the Junior high school; George, in the sixth grade of the public schools; and James Monroe.
