Funeral services for John Carter Hairston, 92, native Texan who died at his house here at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Kiker-Warren Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. M. Leland Murphy, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Bartlett cemetery with graveside rites.

The family has requested that no flowers be sent, but that contributions be made to the building fund of the First Presbyterian Church instead.

Mr. Hairston, who lived at 140 Mulberry St., had been seriously ill for the past two weeks.

Born Nov. 14, 1860 at Old Independence in Washington County, he was a grandson of Judge John P. Coles, one of Stephen F. Austin's original 300 colonists.

Judge Coles was first mayor of Washington municipality and first chief justice of Washington County, receiving his appointment from Sam Houston.

Mr. Hairston attended Texas A&M College and was a graduate of Bastmen's Business College at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., later becoming an accountant.

He married the former Ella Josephine Moss at Bartlett on Dec. 31, 1890.

Mr. Hairston had lived in Abilene for 36 years.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Thomas C. Gilpin of Great Neck, N. Y., and Mrs. Wallace M. Milton of Ozark, Ark; one granddaughter, one niece, and several nephews.

Pallbearers will be Julian McDaniel, Tom H. Willis, Clarence Symes, Hay M. Wolfe, V. L. Shiflett, and Harold D. Austin.
