Biography*ARTEMAS JENNINGS ERVIN, JR., of Crawford, was born May 13, 1874, at Crawford, Lowndes County, Miss., and is the son of Artemas Jennings Ervin and wife, Eliza Ervin.

His ancestros came to America from Scotland and settled in South Carolina, a paternal grandfather was a member of the Legistlature of 1876. The father of the subject of this sketch was a soldier of the Confederacy, commanded a company of the Eleventh Mississippi Regiment; member of the Legislature 1878, 1880, 1882; delegate from Lowndes County in the Constitutional Convention of 1890.

Mr. Ervin attended the primary schools of Lowndes County; took commercial course at Eaton, Burnett and Burlin's Business College in 1893; was graduated from Georgetown University in 1896 with the degree of L.L.R; took L.L.M. degree in 1897; is a merchant; Mayor of Crawford 1900; elected to the House of Representatives from Lowndes County November 3, 1903.

Mr. Ervin is a Democrat; member of the Methodist Church and is aMason; married Septemter 25, 1902 at Washington, D.C. to Maud Marie Mason, daughter of Asa Stephenson maswon and wife, Emma Fitzpatrick, of Alexandria, Mo. Mrs. Ervin's ancestors were from England and settled In Virginia." Mississippi Statistical Record.4

 
NewspaperArtemus Jennings ERVIN Jr. witnessed the Newspaper of George William HAIRSTON on 3 March 1908; CITIZENS OF CRAWFORD TO ESTABLISH BANK -- The enterprising citizens of Crawford are arranging to establish a bank at that place. It will have a capital of $10,000 and will be knowrn as The Bank of Crawford. "The incorporators and Messrs. G. P. Waller, G. W. Hairston, A. J. Ervin, Jr., W. E. Ervin, Brooks and Ledbetter and N. S. Carr. Crawford has a splendid country surrounding it and populated by an enterprising and substantial citizenship and there is no reason why the new bank should not make good. -- The Columbus Commercial, March 3, 1908, Page 5.
